NAVIGON North America App Reviews

No GPS most often

Could be great except that most often it will not locate you with the GPS while other apps like Maps, G-Maps, Google Earth and many others do it without any problem. Then goes in a simulation mode so useless without a passenger!

No street names

In this version the spoken directions do not include the names of streets in which to turn. It only says turn right or turn left. This is very frustrating.

Tested in Ontario, Canada

Best Navigation I ever had, better than most fix mounted systems. The only problem, if youve shielded screens, so the GPS had trouble to get enough signalstrength. But its well known at all inside systems not using an external Antenna. Regards Mike

More unnecessary features...

Instead if adding gimmick features, when will the app support an indispensable feature for a change, a scale bar on 2D maps? Or am I the only remaining dinosaur around still using 2D maps?

Traffic Live Warning

Hello. I would like to share my experience using the Navigon application on my iPad (a Wi-Fi model without cellular function). I also purchased the sky pro GPS device to receive GPS information and it works well with the Navigon application. The maps are easy to use and the directions are fairly good. In that way, I am satisfied with the Navigon application as it allows me to use it without a data plan. My main problem is with the Traffic Live service: it wont work without a data plan and there is no indication of that before purchase, either on the Apple store or on Navigon website. This may be obvious to many but for people who are not tech savvy like myself, it should be clearly indicated by the vendor...

Waste of money....

Wow, I cant believe an app of this price will route me via detours of 1 to 2 hours just to stay on the freeway... It would make the drive to my parents house 5.5 hours instead of the 4 it should be.

Update crash

Just updated. iPhone 5S. App keep crashing on startup even after a reboot of the phone itself. Unusable.

Not happy

With new navigon update app does not open and crashes right away. Please fix and test before any new updates. Using iphone 5 ios 7.1.2

the best offline gps

no data used at all. perfect for me when traveling to usa and outside of my cell carrier area. Would be nice to have folders in our favorite to sort everything

Still one thing bugging me...

Id really appreciate more notice before a turn. Too many times Ive found myself in the far left lane and only 200m to get over 3 lanes to make a turn when Im in unfamiliar territory. Apple Maps will give me up to 10kms notice depending on the circumstances (on the freeway for instance).

Doesnt work anymore

The new update i just installed was supposed to address crashing issues in IOS7. At least I used to be able to load a destination after a few tries. Now it crashes everytime. I cant load any destinations. Really disappointed in this app that used to run so well.

Much Better

Hotfix to 2.10.1 fixed all my issues. Now works perfectly on IOS 7.1.2.

Update

New update is extremely annoying. It says caution every time you come to a bend in the road no matter how small. Get rid of it

Great, but still room to improve

I would never let a friend buy this. Once upon a time it had some value. Today, Google on my iPhone is radically better. At least in Toronto, the POI list is pathetic. Most of the time, I use a GPS by punching in the POI, not the address. Their list is so tiny, its worthless. And entering an address is such a pain. In Google, you just type the address. Here, you have to choose a country, then a province, then a street name, then a number. And if you then realize youre in the wrong city, you have to back all the way out, then re-enter everything else. Its insane! Definitely not worth buying.

What happened? Resolved

Great option if you want a good GPS that doesnt need any cellular data.

WARNING

This app may not work reliably with your in-dash system through Bluetooth. This risk is not disclosed by the developer. The developer knows many of the popular in-dash systems its software may not reliably work with, but does not disclose this information on the App Store or provide a warning and link to access it. Also, you may find the software will stop working with your in-dash system and you will not be informed proactively through product support information. This may waste your time. Anyone using an in-dash system on Toyota Camry model year 2013 may experience a problem with audible directions working. Dont think that because other Bluetooth connectivity works fine that Navigon will work OK. Widget basically doesnt work. Once you add to Widgets list, you cant delete them. Why add features not ready for use?

Offline maps is what makes this app worth it!

I did a lot of research when choosing a GPS app and Im very happy I chose this one. Yes, once in a while you have issues with what route it chooses to send you but the same thing can be said for every GPS app out there, free or paid. The main advantage of this app is the offline maps capability. In northern BC, there are lots of areas between towns with no cell coverage so Apple or Google maps wont help you there folks. And when we traveled down through the U.S., we didnt have to buy a data plan in order to use online maps. Offline maps and a nice UI make this a great app.

Failed app: Map updates not free

I wrote years ago that "The app is good but switching future map updates from free to $14.99 is a bad way to treat your existing customers." Its incredible that in light of Apple and Google Maps and larger data plans becoming more ubiquitous, Navigon would still dare to charge for map updates. Whats worse is the price is now $15.99, and it only gets you two years worth of updates. Id like to use this app more as the interface is pretty but my data plan plus now-outdated maps make it useless. Do not buy unless you like throwing away money.

Great offline maps for driving

I have been using Navigon since its inception. Now Garmin owns this company and they have been continuing to update it with new features. Its actually more popular than their own Garmin app. Pros - Great offline maps, download only the province/state you need. - Navigation works very well, easy to understand - New search bar works well - Optional routes are shown if available - Reliable, does not crash Cons - Does not replace Google Maps or Apple Maps - New "Acoustic bend warning" is extremely annoying, turn this off in Sounds. - While driving on the highway express lane in Toronto it will alert you to stay there every exit to the collectors. I have to turn off announcements for this area. - Traffic data is not as easy to understand as Google/Apple maps. - Map updates are no longer free. Although they do seem to release an update every couple of years. I always use this app when driving up north or in the U.S., otherwise I choose Google/Apple Maps. I have a large data plan and I find Google/Apple quicker for everyday usage.

Bring back the Contact Groups!

July 17, 2015: Complete revision of the UI they say, but they still havent brought back the ability to view Contacts by Group! Come on guys! May 3, 2015: This has been my go-to GPS app since it was first released way back when. Have bought all the add-ins to help support the cause. The latest update, however, makes it almost unusable for me. No longer can I choose to view only the addresses in a single Group in my Contacts list. Instead Ive got to dig through *thousands* of Contacts to find the one I want. I have a Group in my Contacts list for every trip I take which contains all the places that I need to get to. Without continued access to these individual groups I have no way to quickly find that trips hotel for instance. Please bring back support for Contact Groups!
